Imam Hussain (A.S.) – The Legacy of Truth and Sacrifice
On the 3rd of Shaban, the world was blessed with the birth of Imam Hussain (A.S), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), the son of Imam Ali (A.S.) and Sayyida Fatima (S.A.). His life was a manifestation of faith, courage, and selflessness, culminating in the greatest sacrifice for Islam at Karbala.
His Birth and Early Life
Imam Hussain (A.S.) was born in Medina on 3rd Shaban, 4 AH. Upon his birth, Jibra’il (A.S.) descended from the heavens and informed the Prophet (S.A.W.) that this child would be martyred for the sake of Islam. The Prophet (S.A.W.) took him in his arms, recited the Adhan and Iqamah in his ears, and named him Hussain by divine command.
Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) deeply loved Imam Hussain (A.S.) and often declared:
“Hussain is from me, and I am from Hussain. May Allah love those who love Hussain.”
(Amali Sheikh Saduq, p. 139; Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 43, p. 261)
Imam Hussain (A.S.) grew up under the care of the Prophet (S.A.W.), Imam Ali (A.S.), and Sayyida Fatima (S.A.), learning the values of justice, patience, and sacrifice.
Imamat and Stand Against Tyranny
After the martyrdom of Imam Hasan (A.S.), Imam Hussain (A.S.) became the rightful Imam of the Ummah. When Yazid usurped power and demanded allegiance, Imam Hussain (A.S.) refused to submit to injustice, declaring:
“A person like me cannot give allegiance to a person like him.”
(Tuhaf al-Uqul, p. 245)
Understanding that Yazid’s rule posed a serious threat to Islam, Imam Hussain (A.S.) set out towards Kufa, responding to calls from the people who sought his leadership. However, he was intercepted at Karbala, where he and his loyal companions prepared to defend the truth.
The Tragedy of Karbala
On Ashura (10th Muharram, 61 AH), despite being outnumbered, Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his companions stood firm against Yazid’s army. One by one, his loved ones were martyred, including his six-month-old son, Ali Asghar (A.S.), who was killed while in his arms.
In his final moments, Imam Hussain (A.S.) addressed Allah:
“O Allah! I am pleased with Your decree and submit to Your command.”
(Maqtal Abi Mikhnaf; Nafasul Mahmoom by Sheikh Abbas Qummi, p. 352)
He was brutally martyred, and his sacrifice became a timeless symbol of truth against falsehood, inspiring generations to uphold justice.
Sayings of Ahlebayt (A.S.) on Imam Hussain (A.S.)
1. Imam Ali (A.S.):
“My son Hussain will be slain in a land called Karbala. Whoever visits him after his martyrdom, Allah will inscribe for him the reward of a thousand accepted Hajj and a thousand accepted Umrah.”
(Kamil al-Ziyarat by Ibn Qulawayh, p. 200)
2. Imam Jafar Sadiq (A.S.):
“Every believer, whose eyes shed tears for the killing of Hussain (A.S.), such that they roll onto his cheeks, Allah shall grant him rooms in Paradise.”
(Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 44, p. 293)
3. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.):
“Surely, there exists in the hearts of the believers a flame with respect to the martyrdom of Hussain (A.S.) that never cools.”
(Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, vol. 10, p. 318)
خاتمة
Imam Hussain (A.S.) lived and sacrificed his life for truth, justice, and Islam. His stand at Karbala was not just a historical event but a timeless lesson for all of humanity—to never bow before oppression and always uphold the values of faith and righteousness.
May we always remain among those who love, follow, and mourn Imam Hussain (A.S.), seeking inspiration from his unwavering faith and sacrifice.
“Peace be upon Hussain, upon Ali ibn Hussain, upon the children of Hussain, and upon the companions of Hussain.”
