Alqamah narrated:
“I asked Imam al-Baqir (A.S.), ‘O Master, please teach me a Ziyarat that I can recite when I am near the shrine of Imam Hussain (A.S.), and also one I can recite from a distant land, even if I can only raise my hand towards Karbala from my rooftop.'”
The Imam replied:
“O Alqamah! After offering two units (rak’ats) of prayer, turn towards the direction of Karbala, even from your home, and offer your salutations (Salam). Then recite what I am about to teach you. If you recite it, you will be counted among those who are visited by the angels. Allah (SWT) will record for you one million good deeds, forgive one million sins, elevate you by ten million ranks, and count you among the martyrs of Karbala. You will be recognized among those who fought and were martyred alongside Imam Hussain (A.S.). Moreover, you will receive the reward of all the Prophets and Messengers (A.S.), and the reward of every person who has visited Imam Hussain (A.S.) since his martyrdom.”
Imam al-Baqir (A.S.) then taught the Ziyarat-e-Ashura, which consists of:
This final supplication is a heart-wrenching and humble expression of gratitude:
“O Allah! All praise belongs to You, just as those who thank You for their great calamities praise You. Praise be to Allah for the greatest of tragedies and severe sufferings. O Allah, grant me the intercession of Imam Hussain (A.S.) on the Day of Judgment, and make my stance firm and truthful with him and his companions who gave their lives for his sake. May Your mercy be upon them all.”
Imam al-Baqir (A.S.) further advised:
“O Alqamah! If you are able to recite this Ziyarat every day, then do so. Surely, you will receive the full reward — InshaAllah.”

It is widely believed that whoever recites Ziyarat-e-Ashura continuously for 40 days will witness a significant transformation or miracle in their life, especially regarding their most heartfelt supplications.
Renowned scholars like Ayatollah Mirza Muhammad Hussain Naeeni — the teacher of Ayatollah al-Khoei — have declared that the benefits of Ziyarat-e-Ashura surpass all other known supplications. Its effectiveness is not only rooted in tradition but also confirmed by the life experiences of many spiritual personalities who used this Ziyarat to overcome massive personal and communal challenges.
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (A.S.) once instructed Safwan, a trusted companion:
“Whenever you are faced with a calamity or need, turn to Imam Hussain (A.S.) through the recitation of Ziyarat-e-Ashura. Present your complaint and request through this Ziyarat, and you will see your problem resolved. Allah never breaks His promise.”
This shows that Ziyarat-e-Ashura is not only a remembrance — it is an active form of seeking help, recognized by the Imams themselves.
The power and impact of Ziyarat-e-Ashura are not only found in narrations from the Imams but also deeply reflected in the lives of our great scholars and saints. One such shining example is the life of Aqa Munir, whose devotion to this sacred Ziyarat inspired generations.
During the time of the Tobacco Movement in Iran, when efforts seemed to fail, scholars wrote a critical letter to Mirza Muhammad Hasan Shirazi. Aqa Munir was entrusted with delivering this letter during his visit to Samarra.
But before he could do so, he encountered Akhund Fath Ali Sultan Abadi, the renowned scholar. Surprisingly, before Aqa Munir could even explain his mission, Akhund recited the exact contents of the letter — revealing his spiritual insight and divine inspiration.
During this blessed meeting, Akhund Fath Ali gave Aqa Munir priceless advice:
“Never abandon action in religion. Always pray the beginning-of-month prayers and Salat Laylat al-Dafn (burial night prayer) whenever you hear a believer has passed. And recite Ziyarat-e-Ashura regularly without fail.”
This marked a turning point in Aqa Munir’s life.
From then on, Aqa Munir began a unique and powerful practice:
During the first ten days of Muharram, he would recite Ziyarat-e-Ashura for each martyr of Karbala individually, dedicating one complete recitation for every shaheed. He would also attend Majalis, and if a gathering reached the point of Sajdah of Ziyarat, he would perform the Sajdah and Ziyarat prayers with full devotion regardless of time or place.
His son-in-law, Aqa Mirza Muhammad Baqir, narrates:
“Even during his final illness and the sakaraat-ul-mawt (moments of death), Aqa Munir remained engaged in the recitation of Ziyarat-e-Ashura. Sometimes, his voice would pause due to weakness, but as soon as he regained strength, he would resume from where he had left off.”
He left this world while reciting Ziyarat-e-Ashura, proving his unwavering love and connection with Imam Hussain (A.S.) until his very last breath.
One of the most touching and spiritually profound stories about the power of Ziyarat-e-Ashura comes from the son of the great scholar, Ayatollah Allama Abdul Husain Amini — the renowned author of Al-Ghadir. His son, Dr. Muhammad Hadi Amiri, narrates a remarkable dream he saw four years after his father’s death, in the early morning before the Adhan of Friday in the year 1394 AH.
In the dream, Dr. Amiri saw his father — Allama Amini — glowing with happiness and peace. He respectfully approached and asked:
“Dear father, what was the cause of your salvation and eternal success in the hereafter? Was it your work on Al-Ghadir? Your knowledge and teachings? Or the library you built?”
Allama Amini gently smiled and replied:
“I don’t know what you mean exactly. Clarify your question.”
So his son asked again:
“Now that you have left this world and entered the next, among all your services — writing, scholarship, building institutions — which one became the true cause of your salvation?”
After a moment of silence and reflection, Allama Amini answered softly but clearly:
“Only the Ziyarat of Imam Hussain (A.S.).”
Dr. Amiri then humbly asked:
“But father, you know that due to political tensions between Iran and Iraq, the road to Karbala is closed. What should I do?”
Allama Amini replied:
“Then attend the Majalis of Imam Hussain (A.S.). You will receive the same reward as one who performs his Ziyarat.”
And then came his final, heartfelt advice:
“My son, I have reminded you many times before, and I repeat again — never, ever neglect the recitation of Ziyarat-e-Ashura. Make it a regular part of your life. It carries unimaginable blessings, effects, and benefits, and will be the cause of your salvation in both worlds. And remember me in your prayers.”
Despite his countless responsibilities — writing the multi-volume Al-Ghadir, teaching, managing an Islamic library, and promoting religious knowledge — Allama Amini never missed his daily recitation of Ziyarat-e-Ashura. His son testifies that his father not only recited it consistently but also encouraged others to adopt it as a spiritual daily habit.
In one powerful incident, a respected scholar recounts a meeting with Ayatollah Behjat on a blessed Friday, the 12th of Dhul Qa’dah. The scholar shared his intention of compiling a book highlighting the countless individuals who had experienced miracles and life-changing blessings through Ziyarat-e-Ashura.
Ayatollah Behjat responded with deep conviction:
“The very existence of Ziyarat-e-Ashura is itself a miracle. Its origin, its chain of transmission, and its spiritual weight prove its divine power.”
He reminded the scholar that Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (A.S.) taught this Ziyarat to Safwan, and in doing so, gave a divine guarantee:
“I guarantee that whoever recites this Ziyarat:
- Their Ziyarat will be accepted
- Their actions will be counted as virtuous
- Whatever their need may be, Allah will never let them return empty-handed.”
The Imam then added:
“O Safwan, I heard this from my father, who heard it from his father, and so on — this chain continues until Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (A.S.), who heard it from the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.W.), who received it from Jibra’il (A.S.), and ultimately from Allah (SWT) Himself.
By Allah’s own oath, whoever recites this Ziyarat, along with Du’a Al-Qamah, whether from near or far, his Ziyarat is accepted, and his needs will surely be fulfilled.”
