The Night of 19th Ramzan – A Tragic Night in Islamic History
The night of 19th Ramzan is one of the saddest nights in Islamic history. It is the night when Imam Ali (A.S.), the first Imam and the cousin of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), was attacked while praying in Masjid-e-Kufa. This attack led to his martyrdom and left the Muslim world in deep sorrow.
What Happened on This Night?
On this night, Imam Ali (A.S.) had his last iftar (breaking of fast) at the house of his daughter, Bibi Umm Kulthum (S.A.). He ate very little—just some milk, bread, and salt. He was always simple in his life and never desired luxury.
After Iftar, he spent the night in worship and prayers. He seemed worried, and when asked, he said, “I feel that my time to meet Allah has come.” He also mentioned that he had seen Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) in a dream, who told him that soon he would be with him in Jannah.
At dawn, Imam Ali (A.S.) went to Masjid-e-Kufa for Fajr prayer. It was a quiet and peaceful night, but something terrible was about to happen. As he began his prayer, a man named Ibn Muljam (لعنة الله عليه), who was hiding in the mosque, suddenly struck Imam Ali (A.S.) on his head with a poisoned sword.
Imam Ali (A.S.)’s Words After the Attack
When the sword hit his head, Imam Ali (A.S.) fell to the ground and said:
“By the Lord of the Kaaba, I have succeeded!”
People rushed to help him, and his sons, Imam Hasan (A.S.) and Imam Hussain (A.S.), carried him home. His wound was very deep, and the poison spread quickly.
The Last Words of Imam Ali (A.S.)
Even in pain, Imam Ali (A.S.) remained patient and calm. He told his children and followers to always fear Allah, to be kind to others, and to stay united. He reminded them to never hurt anyone and to always follow the path of justice.
For two days, he remained in pain, praying and giving advice. On the 21st of Ramzan, he passed away, leaving the Muslim world in tears.
Why Is This Night Important?
