Why the angles visit karbala day and night- a heavenly perspective
Introduction:
Karbala More Than Just a Land The very mention of Karbala stirs deep love and reverence in the hearts of believers. It is not merely a geographical location but a sacred ground where Imam Hussain (AS) and his devoted companions sacrificed their lives for truth and justice. Karbala represents a spiritual battlefield, a divine message, and a living history that continues to guide humanity in distinguishing right from wrong.
This is the place where the ultimate stand against oppression took place, where tyranny was challenged, and where Imam Hussain’s sacrifice illuminated the world with a new light. The pure blood spilled on this land impacted not only the people of that time but resonated across the entire universe. The Quran and authentic traditions highlight the significance of such sacred places where God’s pleasure and the memory of His chosen ones remain alive.
Today, the land of Karbala remains vibrant and alive because this message still echoes in the hearts of millions. It is a place where tears flow, prayers rise, and angels descend day and night to express their love and devotion by visiting the shrine of Imam Hussain (AS).
Quranic Reference and Remembrance of Heavenly Places In the Holy Quran, Allah mentions the special significance of certain lands in multiple places. For example, in Surah At Tin, Allah swears by:
By the fig and the olive, and Mount Sinai, and this secure city (Makkah)
These verses indicate that some lands carry Allah’s special blessings and divine favor. Similarly, the teachings and sayings of Ahlul-Bayt (AS) highlight the sacredness of Karbala.
Imam Ali (AS) said:
The land of Karbala is a piece of Paradise on earth. Imam Hussain (AS) himself said:
This land is the garden of my grandfather, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Such narrations emphasize that Karbala is not an ordinary land but a holy and spiritually charged place, made special by Allah because of His pleasure and the sacrifices of His chosen ones. In Islamic history, places like Makkah, Madinah, Kufa, Najaf, and Karbala are known as locations where the blessings of heaven and earth unite. Karbala, in particular, is where the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) caused the heavens and the earth to weep, granting it immense celestial significance. This is why angels come day and night to visit this sacred land because it is not only materially blessed but also spiritually connected to the gardens of Paradise.
Angels Visiting Karbala Insights from Authentic Traditions The spiritual significance of the land of Karbala is evident from the fact that heavenly beings, the angels, visit this sacred place day and night. In Shia texts, there are narrations from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) that shed light on this reality.
According to a narration in Bihar al Anwar:
Every morning and evening, seventy thousand angels descend upon the land of Karbala to visit the shrine of Imam Hussain (AS). They offer their salutations, weep, and then return to the heavens. After them, another seventy thousand angels arrive, and this cycle will continue until the Day of Judgment.
This narration highlights the special mission of the angels and the sanctity of Karbala. The angels do not just visit; they renew the remembrance of Imam Hussain’s sacrifice and pray for Allah’s pleasure. The daily visit of angels symbolizes that the sacrifice of Karbala is not limited to the earthly realm but has a profound impact on the heavens as well. It is a celestial mourning and worship scene, where even angels weep for the suffering and sacrifice of humanity.
Why Do Angels Visit Karbala? A Divine and Spiritual Insight The sacred land of Karbala holds immense spiritual significance, attracting not only human devotees but also heavenly beings the angels. Angels visit Karbala because it is the site of the greatest sacrifice made to please Allah.
Imam Hussain (AS) stood firmly against oppression and injustice, sacrificing his life to protect Islam. This pure and profound sacrifice resonates even in the heavens. The angels’ presence in Karbala is an act of worship, a renewal of their pledge, and a way to keep the memory of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom alive. They honor his sacrifice, offer prayers, and maintain a spiritual connection between the earth and the heavens.
This divine visitation teaches us that sacrificing one’s life for truth is not merely a worldly act but deepl rooted in spiritual realms. Therefore, the event of Karbala should be understood not just as a historical incident but as a living, ongoing lesson for humanity.
The Angels Who Mourn at Karbala A man once asked Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS):
“May I be your ransom, O son of the Messenger of Allah. On the night of Arafah, I was in the city of Hira, and I
witnessed something astonishing. I saw nearly three to four thousand individuals with radiant faces, wearing pure white garments, and emanating a fragrance more beautiful than anything I had ever experienced. They had gathered in the night, praying collectively. I intended to go near the grave of Imam Hussain (AS) to kiss it and offer my prayers and supplications. However, due to the large number of people, I could not reach it.
When dawn approached, I fell into prostration. But when I raised my head from sujood, I found that none of
those people remained. They had all disappeared without a trace.” Imam al-Sadiq (AS) responded:
“Do you know who they were?”
The man replied, “May I be sacrificed for you, I do not know.”
The Imam said:
“My father narrated to me from his father, who said: When Hussain (AS) was martyred, four thousand angels passed by his body. They ascended toward the heavens, and Allah revealed to them: ‘O group of angels! You passed by the son of My beloved and chosen Prophet while he was slain and forsaken. Yet you did not come to his aid. Now descend to the earth and weep over his grave in a scattered and sorrowful state until the Day of Judgment.’
So those angels remain at the grave of Hussain (AS), crying over him continuously until the end of time.” In some narrations, the number of angels present is reported to be 70,000, and in others, 50,000.

Angels Long to Visit Karbala A Heavenly Request Fulfilled Daily.
According to a narration from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS), every angel in the heavens pleads with Allah for permission to visit the grave of Imam Hussain (AS). Once permission is granted, a group of angels descends to Karbala for visitation (Ziyarat), while another group returns to the heavens after completing theirs. This divine rotation of angelic visits continues perpetually.
The Sacred Dimensions of Imam Hussain’s Grave Imam al-Sadiq (AS) described the blessed grave of Hussain (AS) as measuring twenty by twenty cubits in am square form, and he affirmed: It is one of the gardens from the gardens of Paradise.
From this sacred space, angels ascend toward the heavens, and in return, exalted angels and divinely appointed Prophets descend to perform Ziyarat. This constant exchange between the heavens and Karbala reflects the spiritual magnitude of this holy land.
From Karbala to the Heavens A Ladder of Light Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) further narrated:
From the grave of Hussain (AS) to the sky, the space is filled with different angels at all times.
This illustrates that there is not a single moment when this sacred path is empty Karbala remains spiritually alive, always surrounded by celestial presence.
The Nightly Descent of 70,000 Angels A Spiritual Journey Another profound narration by
Imam al-Sadiq (AS) states:
Allah has not created any creature more numerous than the angels. Every night, seventy thousand angels descend from the heavens. From the beginning of the night until dawn, they perform Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba. After sunrise, they go to the Prophet’s grave and greet him with peace. Then, they move to the grave of Amir al-Mu’mineen (Imam Ali AS) and send their salutations. Finally, they reach the grave of Imam Hussain (AS), greet him, and before dusk returns, they ascend back to the heavens. This cyclical movement of divine beings highlights the celestial connection of these sacred personalities and reinforces the idea that Karbala is not just a land on earth but a gateway to the heavens.
