Amaal For The 3rd Muharram Land Of Karbala – Journey Of Truth

Historical Reflection: 3rd Muharram (Karbala)

The Situation After Arrival in Karbala

By the 3rd of Muharram, 61 AH, Imam Husayn (AS) and his small caravan had already settled on the land of Karbala. This was no longer a journey, it had become a stand for truth. On this day, the forces opposing Imam Husayn (AS) began to increase in number, and the environment shifted from uncertainty to clear confrontation.

The Arrival of the Main Opposing Force

The most pivotal event of the 3rd of Muharram was the arrival of the Umayyad army’s main contingent, led by Umar ibn Sa’d.

Commander’s Motivation

Ibn Sa’d, initially hesitant, was forced by the manipulative governor of Kufa, Ubaidullah Ibn Ziyad, to take command. His motivation was purely materialistic: he was promised the governorship of Ray (a rich province) in exchange for securing or eliminating Imam Husayn. His greed overcame his conscience and his relationship to the Prophet’s family.

The Encirclement

The army settled directly opposite the camp of Imam Husayn, forming a definitive blockade. The number of soldiers grew daily, making the defense of the small caravan appear humanly impossible.

The Cutting of the Water Supply (A Precursor)

While the full and final blockading of the water (cutting off access to the Euphrates River) is often cited as happening on the 7th of Muharram, the arrival of the large army on the 3rd immediately created a situation where water access became severely restricted and constantly guarded. The strategic placement of Ibn Sa’d’s army effectively signaled the beginning of the siege and the deprivation of basic necessities.

Conclusion

3rd Muharram reminds us that when truth stands firm, falsehood gathers strength to oppose it. Imam Husayn (AS), though surrounded and outnumbered, remained steadfast in his mission of justice and reform. This day teaches that real success lies in patience, courage, and unwavering loyalty to truth, even when the path is difficult.

“Indeed Allah is with the patient.”

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153
