21st Ramadan A’maal Guide: Laylatul Qadr Night of Decree

“Indeed, We sent it (the Qur’an) down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”

Reference: Qur’an, Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-5

Significance: Worship, du’a, and Quran recitation on this night are rewarded more than a thousand months of ordinary deeds.

Laylat-ul-Qadr 21st Ramadan A’maal

Introduction

The 21st night of Ramadan is one of the special nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, which are known for their immense spiritual significance. Among these nights, believers seek Laylat al-Qadr — the “Night of Decree”, a night better than a thousand months, as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an:

“Indeed, We sent it (the Qur’an) down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn (mankind).”

— Surah Ad-Dukhan, 44:3

The night symbolises mercy, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal. Worship performed during this night is believed to carry multiplied rewards, and heartfelt du’a (supplication) is especially potent. Traditionally, acts of devotion include prayers, Qur’an recitation, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), charity, and repentance.

A unique recommended practice on the 21st night is to place the Holy Qur’an on one’s head as a sign of humility and reverence, while reciting specific supplications asking for forgiveness, guidance, and protection from worldly and spiritual difficulties.

Both the day and night of 21st Ramadan offer opportunities to increase good deeds, strengthen one’s connection with Allah, and seek His mercy and blessings.

On 21st Ramadhan, 40 AH, Imam Ali ibn Abi-Talib, Amir al-Mu’minin (PBUH), departed from this life as a martyr. The night of 19 Ramadhan 40 A.H., Ibne Muljim (May the curse of Allah befall him) had dealt a blow on his head, when Imam (AS) cried out: “By the Lord of the Kabah, I have been successful!”

Day of 21st Ramadan

  • Recite portions of the Qur’an and reflect on their meanings.
  • Engage in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) throughout the day.
  • Give charity (sadaqah) and perform acts of kindness.
  • Prepare for the night worship by resting and setting intentions.

Night of 21st Ramadan – Complete A’maal Guide

Step 1: Perform Ghusl (Ritual Purification)

Before beginning the night prayers, perform Ghusl (ritual bath) to purify yourself spiritually and physically.

Step 2: Special 2-Raka’at Prayer

Offer a special 2-Raka’at prayer with the following recitation in each raka’ah:

  • Surah Al-Fatiha (once)
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas (Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad) – 7 times

Hadith Reference: Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) said that whoever performs two Raka’at of prayers during Shab-e-Qadr in this manner, and after prayers recites Astaghfirullah 70 times before rising, Allah will forgive all his sins and the sins of his parents.

Step 3: After Prayer – Istighfar (70 times)

After completing the 2-Raka’at prayer, recite the following 70 times before standing up:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullāha wa atūbu ilayh

Translation: “I seek forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance.”

How to perform: Recite this 70 times while still sitting after prayer, before you stand up.

Step 4: Place the Holy Qur’an on Your Head – First Dua

Instruction: Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS) says that during these nights (19th, 21st, and 23rd of Ramadan), hold and open the Holy Quran in front of your face and recite this dua:

Transliteration:

Allāhumma innī as’aluka bi kitābik-al munzal-i wa mā fīh-i wa fīhi-smok-al akbar wa asmā’uk-al ḥusnā wa mā yukhāfu wa yurjā an taj’alanī min ‘utaqā’ika min-an nār-i wa taqḍi-ya ḥawā’ijī lid-dunyā wal ākhirah.

Translation:

“O Allah, I ask You by Your revealed Book and what is in it; and in it is Your Greatest Name, and Your Beautiful Names, and what is feared and hoped for; that You make me among those freed from the Fire, and fulfill my needs for this world and the Hereafter.”

After reciting this dua, ask for whatever you wish from Allah. Inshallah, that wish will be granted.

Step 5: Place the Qur’an on Your Head – Second Dua (with Names of 14 Masoomeen)

Instruction: Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) recommends: “Put the Holy Quran on your head and say:”

Transliteration:

Allāhumma bi ḥaqqi hāzal qur’ān-i wa bi ḥaqqi man arsaltahu bihī wa bi ḥaqqi kulli mu’minin madaḥtahu fīh-i wa bi ḥaqqika ‘alayhim fa lā aḥada a’rafu bi ḥaqqika minka.

Translation:

“O Allah, by the right of this Qur’an, and by the right of the one through whom You sent it, and by the right of every believer You have praised in it, and by Your right upon them—for none knows Your right better than You.”

Then recite the following 10 times each:

Step 8: Continue Acts of Charity

Give charity (sadaqah) and help others in need throughout the night and the following day.

Common A’maal of All Three Nights (19th, 21st, 23rd)

The following acts of worship are recommended for all three blessed nights of Laylatul Qadr:

1. Wudu Before Maghrib

It is recommended for believers to perform ablution (wudu) in the evening so that they can offer Maghrib and Isha prayers in complete cleanliness.

2. Special 2-Raka’at Prayer

Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) has said that whoever performs two Raka’at of prayers during Shab-e-Qadr in the manner described earlier (Surah Al-Fatiha + 7 times Surah Al-Ikhlas) and recites Astaghfirullah 70 times before rising, Allah will forgive all his sins and the sins of his parents.

3. 100 Raka’at Prayer (If Possible)

It is highly recommended to perform 100 raka’at of prayer on all three nights, especially on the 23rd night of Ramadan. If you do not feel sufficient energy to pray standing, it is still recommended to pray in a sitting position.

Note: If some of your prayers are QAZA (obligatory prayers missed earlier which have to be performed), then perform the QAZA prayers for 6 days instead of the 100 raka’at of prayers.

4. Recommended Duas

During these nights, it is recommended to recite:

  • Dua Joshan-e-Kabeer
  • Dua Joshan-e-Sagheer
  • Dua Makaram-ul-Ikhlaq
  • Dua-e-Tauba

5. Ziyarat-e-Warisa

It is highly recommended to recite the Ziyarat-e-Warisa of Imam Hussain (AS) on all three nights (19th, 21st, and 23rd).

And in what You decree and determine, make my life long, expand my sustenance, and decree for me in all my affairs what is best for me in my worldly life and my Hereafter. O Most Merciful of the merciful.”
