The Epidemic Was Stopped Through Ziyarat e Ashura

Introduction

What would you do if your whole city was falling sick and people were dying daily? In such a desperate time, a divine solution was given and those who followed it survived. This is the real story of Samarra, a city struck by an epidemic until Ziyarat e Ashura became the shield.

The Setting

The great scholar Sheikh Hassan Fareed Gilpaayegani narrates from the seminary of Hawza Ilmiyyah that they were attending a private lesson by Ayatollah Mirza Muhammad Taqi Shirazi upstairs. Meanwhile, Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Fasharki, hearing his friend’s voice, came up from downstairs to join.

At the time, the city of Samarra was gripped by a deadly epidemic that was taking lives daily.

The Divine Instruction

Ayatollah Fasharki said to Mirza Shirazi,

“Do you consider me a just and qualified Mujtahid?”

He replied, “Yes.”

“Then if I give a ruling, will you implement it?”

“Yes.”

Ayatollah Fasharki declared:

“I order that all Shia of Samarra recite Ziyarat e Ashura for 10 consecutive days, and gift its reward to the soul of Nargis Khatoon, the respected mother of Imam Mahdi (A.J.T.F). Let her be our intercessor before her son.”

He added:

“I guarantee that whoever performs this act will be saved from the epidemic.”

This instruction was conveyed to all the Shia. Everyone obeyed.

The Miracle

From the very next day, not a single Shia died.

Only one person, a cobbler (mochi), passed away, and even that was uncertain — whether he had performed the Ziyarat or not, and if he had died from the illness or another cause.

Meanwhile, many Sunni deaths continued daily. It became clear that the Shia were being protected. Some Sunnis even asked their Shia friends,

“What are you doing that none of you are dying?”

They replied,

“We are reciting Ziyarat e Ashura with devotion, and the calamity moves away from us.”

This incident shows us the power of collective dua and the miraculous effect of Ziyarat e Ashura when done with sincerity and the right niyyah. When gifted to the soul of Bibi Nargis (S.A), it even becomes a shield against deadly diseases.
